Growing a Business - the book

In 1988, Paul Hawken (yes, the one from the Smith & Hawken fame) published a book called, Growing a Business. I picked it off the bookshelf in the spring of 1992 and it sat on my shelf until I hit the beach later that summer. When I did crack it, sitting on the porch of a rented house in Myrtle Beach, SC, I absorbed it.

It was then, and remains now, one of my favorite books. It's still on my shelf and I refer it to others trying to grow their business because it's clear, funny and packed with common sense. I find it readable today, unlike many topical business books.

My favorite chapter is, "If it's a good idea, it's too late." In this chapter, Hawken talks about innovation and how if we're faced with naysayers, we may actually be onto something with our business model. For that chapter alone, it's worth purchasing. It changed my mindset about business development.

If you only buy one business book, this is the one to buy. It's an easy ready and you'll come away thinking differently about business.
